Amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. During a meeting in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Wang emphasized the importance of restraint and a return to negotiations, highlighting that the current situation benefits neither the countries involved nor the global community.
Wang called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies, underscoring the necessity of maintaining safe and accessible international shipping routes. He stressed that stability in this region is crucial for sustaining international supply chains, urging both Washington and Tehran to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding as a basis for renewing dialogue.
The Chinese foreign minister also expressed concern over the potential spread of tensions to neighboring areas, such as Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for regional disputes to be resolved through diplomatic channels. His remarks reinforced China’s stance on promoting stability and peace in the Middle East through dialogue rather than conflict.
On his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi echoed the sentiment for peace, stating that Iran does not wish for the conflict to persist. He affirmed Tehran’s readiness to re-engage in diplomatic talks while safeguarding its national interests. Araghchi also reiterated Iran’s commitment to the existing US-Iran memorandum and showed openness to improving relations and security with regional partners.
Araghchi welcomed China’s initiative in proposing measures to strengthen peace and security in the Middle East, signifying Tehran’s willingness to deepen cooperative ties with Beijing. This engagement highlights a mutual interest in fostering a more stable and secure geopolitical landscape in the region.
