Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen’s passing occurred on Wednesday at his Los Angeles residence, where he was surrounded by family, as stated by his relatives.
Hailing from Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio, leading to his emergence as a distinguished figure in the realm of voice acting. He first lent his voice to the character of Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series, later reprising the role in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, alongside numerous spin-offs. His portrayal of the noble Autobot leader left an indelible mark on the franchise.
Cullen also became synonymous with Eeyore, the wistful donkey from the Winnie the Pooh series. His voice brought the character to life in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and various subsequent television adaptations, films, and video games. Beyond these roles, Cullen’s talent extended to memorable performances such as voicing KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT, in Knight Rider, and providing the eerie clicking sounds of the alien creature in the 1987 film Predator. He even voiced the mighty King Kong in the 1976 remake.
In shaping the character of Optimus Prime, Cullen drew inspiration from his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain. Larry advised Cullen to embody the character as a true hero, emphasizing strength tempered with restraint. This approach resonated with audiences and earned Cullen a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011. Additionally, his contribution to the world of animation was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Over the course of his extensive career, Cullen’s voice became inextricably linked with some of the most beloved animated and science-fiction characters, securing his enduring legacy in popular culture.
