The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that operators of Boeing 737 Max aircraft conduct inspections on a specific structural component due to concerns about potential cracks. This directive is expected to impact approximately 471 planes, with examinations set to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is on the bear strap, a structural sheet that reinforces the fuselage near the exit doors, a critical area for maintaining the aircraft’s structural integrity.
This precautionary measure follows the discovery of similar cracks in the bear straps of older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to inspections of those aircraft in the past. Although no cracks have been reported in the 737 Max series so far, the FAA has noted that the manufacturing and design processes are similar across these models, raising the possibility of similar issues arising.
In light of these findings, regulators have expressed concerns that undetected cracks in the bear strap could compromise the structural strength of the aircraft, posing potential risks. Boeing has acknowledged the issue, which was identified in 2019, and has been collaborating with airlines to address it. The company supports the FAA’s decision to enforce mandatory inspections, emphasizing that these checks are intended to detect and rectify any problems before they escalate to critical levels.
